This is a museum quality reproduction of a WWI Balloon Pilot wing made in the tradition of the Dallas Wings. In WWI wings were authorized to be made in silk embroidery bit did not hold up, so Pilots turned to jewelers and insignia companies to make these type of wings. The wings were made to look like the authorized ones and mounted on a brass under plate that was covered in wool cloth. Both black and dark blue cloths were used. This four-piece wing is made in the same way the originals were made, by hand and sewn together. While not an original an exact copy to fill a hole in a collection until by some lucky chance an original shows up.
The picture shown is missing the star that would be above the Balloon basket to designate an Aeronaut.
